China’s censors getting confused

geishaEarlier China’s censors gave the OK for “Memoirs of a Geisha” to open in China January 9th. Then it seems, somebody actually watched the movie and realized that it was not acceptable. It is now due for release February 10th. Upon further reading it seems to be pushed even to March.

Sometimes China’s policies can be mighty confusing, though I think the delay was probably caused by speculation that it could cause anti-Japanese sentiments. I am surprised that the Chinese government does not ban more Japan related things. You know, things such as Sony computers, Kirin beer and Pocky chocolates. Though, Pocky is probably too delicious to get rid of.

Execs claim there was a sex scene that needs to be cut from the movie before it will be released. What, did Chinese censors miss it the first time they saw it? Perhaps they were out buying popcorn.

One way or another, I just wish they would make up their mind!
